Amir Xhakoviq crafts a distinctive “singing tone,” blending intellectual rigor with Balkan heritage, championing overlooked repertoire through expressive depth and contemporary, research-driven musical exploration.

Amir Xhakoviq (b. 1985) is an Albanian concert pianist whose artistry has established him as one of the preeminent musical voices in Albania and the wider Balkan region. His work is defined by a profound intellectual rigor and a deep-seated connection to the cultural crossroads of Southeastern Europe. Through his acclaimed recording projects with Toccata Classics, Xhakoviq has become a leading advocate for Balkan piano repertoire, bringing this rich but often neglected geography of sound to the global stage.

Xhakoviq’s foundational studying began in Montenegro under the mentorship of the esteemed Russian professor Vladimir Bochkarjov, a prominent graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. As a student of the legendary Lev Naumov—Heinrich Neuhaus’s long-time assistant and successor — Bochkarjov passed on the poetic depth and rigorous technical standards of the Neuhaus school. It was through this lineage that Xhakoviq inherited the cultivation of the "singing tone," a hallmark of the Russian tradition that remains central to his expressive palette.

His artistic identity was further refined in Western Europe at the LUCA School of Arts (Lemmensinstituut) in Belgium, where he earned his Master’s degree under the renowned American pianist Alan Weiss. Xhakoviq subsequently completed his Doctoral Studies in Performing Arts at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade under the guidance of the distinguished pianist Aleksandar Serdar. From this solid foundation in the traditional masterworks of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt, Xhakoviq has developed a distinct and individual repertoire profile. He has increasingly dedicated himself to the complexities of 20th-century and contemporary music, performing works by masters such as Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Messiaen, Ligeti, Swerts and Rzewski.

More recently, he has placed a particular emphasis on a research-based repertoire of Balkan composers, a project that has garnered significant international attention. London-based Critic Steve Arloff, reviewing the album The Balkan Piano, Volume One, praised Xhakoviq’s commitment to this vibrant but overlooked musical landscape, hailing the recording as a vital document of the region's contribution to 20th-century music. Highlighting Xhakoviq's ability to navigate complex rhythms and folkloric nuances with technical brilliance, Arloff’s review recognized a quality of "genius" in his interpretive insight, acknowledging him as a vital bridge connecting the historical avant-garde of Southeastern Europe with the international contemporary scene.

His international presence has resonated on stages across the Balkans, Italy, Greece, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, including an extensive tour of Japan in 2019. As a soloist, he has collaborated with distinguished ensembles including the Albanian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Montenegrin Symphony Orchestra, and the Yanai City Symphony Orchestra. This multifaceted career—as a performer, teacher, researcher, and Toccata Classics artist—has granted him a uniquely authoritative musical voice that bridges traditional repertoire with contemporary classical music. Xhakoviq is currently an Associate Professor Dr. at the University of Arts in Tirana.
